2. Birth and the life of luxury
Buddha was born in Lumbini, a place in modern-day Nepal. His father was an oligarch in the Shakya community. A man of power, wealth and high aspirations.
About 10 months before the birth of Buddha, his mother had a dream. In the dream, she saw a beautiful white elephant who offered her a lotus flower and entered her body from the side.
When Buddha was born he was named Gautama and a group of priests were invited to foresee his future. They all predicted that he would either be a great king or a holy man.
His father, who had high ambitions on his son, did not want him to be a holy man, but rather a king. So he planned Gautama’s life accordingly. He kept him away from all religious teachings and even the outside world.
Gautama lived in a palace which he was not allowed to leave. His father made sure to provide everything for his son. He was trained to become a warrior as well as raised in luxury. He had access to all kinds of amenities, pleasures and beautiful women around him.
When Gautama turned 16 years old, his father got him married to a beautiful princess. Gautama enjoyed her company and was very fond of her. Soon they had a little boy called Rahula.
Prince Gautama lived in such wealth, pleasure and luxury for the first 29 years of his life. Happy and oblivious of the sorrows and sufferings of life.
Then suddenly his life turned upside down.
